IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT - PHONE SCAM

We’ve recently become aware of a concerning scam targeting individuals in our community. Scammers are posing as representatives from Medicare, deceiving individuals into supplying their Social Security Number while the caller ID number appears to be from our local hospital.

This is NOT a legitimate call coming from the hospital or on behalf of Medicare.

To protect yourself and your loved ones from falling victim to this scam, we urge you to take the following precautions:

  1. Verify the Caller’s Identity: Don’t hesitate to ask the caller for their name, department, and contact information. Legitimate representatives will willingly provide this information. If the caller is hesitant or refuses to comply, it’s a red flag indicating potential fraud.
  2. End the Call: If you suspect that you’re dealing with a scammer, it’s best to terminate the call immediately. Refrain from engaging with the caller or providing any personal or financial information.
  3. Call Back: If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of a call but want to verify, ask to hang up and call back using a number you trust. Our hospital staff understands the importance of safeguarding your identity, and we encourage you to take this step to ensure your security. Remember, just as it occurred in this incident, the caller ID can be manipulated to display a local number you are familiar with to go along with their scam.

We are committed to the safety and well-being of our community and urge you to be aware of fraudulent scams like this one.

If you have any concerns or encounter suspicious activity regarding someone posing as a representative Sampson Regional Medical Center, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Director of Risk Management at 910.590.8715.
